So they didn’t talk. They made love.
Then they slept.
They got in the shower.
They didn’t dress, just put on clean pajamas.
Tried, anyway.
"Stop," she said. "You're making it worse."
"Sorry," he said.
They laughed. They spent more time together than they normally would.
Even he had exhausted himself on giving her attention.
But the truth was, he was starting to change her mind.
"Okay," he said.
"But I hope that doesn't mean you'll stop being sweet to me."
"Nah," he said. "I’ll be sweet to you again later."
Panic. Because her heart told her to stop, turn back, change her mind. Her heart told her this would ruin everything, break everything. Her heart told her it could never be the same again.
Her gut told her to stick to the plan.
She didn’t know which to listen to.
Her mom said, "I’m worried about you. Just come visit, I want to see you. Then you can go back if you want."
That sounded reasonable enough.
Reason over heart.
They slept and they woke.
Three days.
“Eat your cereal,” she said.
“I don't feel like it,” he said.
“It’ll be okay,” she told him. “Isn’t there anything you ever wanted to do on your own?”
He thought about this. “I don’t know. Maybe fix up an old motorcycle.”
Her grin was both full of wonder and worry. “You’d look so hot on a motorcycle."
"But promise me you’ll wear a helmet. You have to wear a helmet. Every time.”
They didn't finish breakfast. They went back to bed in the middle of the day.
“I don’t understand why you’re doing this if it makes you so sad.”
She wasn’t sure what good could come of telling him the truth, but she told him anyway because she always told him the truth. “Partly I want you to talk me out of it. But partly also, I know we’re going to be sorry later if you do.”
“What do you want me to say to that?”
She huffed. She scooted across the bed and they stopped fighting.
Two days left.
"You have plenty of pictures of me."
"I mean, a different kind of pictures."
"Okay," she said.
"I don't know, do something sexy."
So he fell down with her.
She climbed onto him, and they kissed and squeezed and pulled and cried out and wore themselves into each other on the floor.
So they went out.
He came out with her, and he met her friends, this phantom of a boyfriend alive on her arm, and she could almost forget she'd ever wanted anything else.
They had fun.
Almost.
"Don’t be a stranger," Benny told him. "We're gonna meet up this summer. Lakeside Beach, baby!"
They made plans for the beach, for summer jobs, for movies, for parties, for all the things she wouldn’t be here for.
It made him want to cry.
"I had fun, did you have fun?"
"Yeah," he said.
"You’ll get to know them, then it won’t be so terrible."
"It wasn’t terrible," he said.
"You won’t?"
"No."
She sat down on the bed and started to cry.
She buried her face in his chest. "Why do you have to be so damn smart all the time?"
"You go visit your parents, and hang out with Hilary, and do whatever you need to do. And when you’re ready to come home, I’ll be here."
"Home," she whispered. When she smiled at him, it was too sad to be considered a smile. "I love you, do you believe me?"
"Yes," he said. "I love you too."
And when they woke, five days were gone.
He drove her to the airport like she'd asked him to.
Push me higher, she said. And he did.
He sent her off into the sky.

A quickie note: the character who was once "Hazel" (Natty's BFF from high school) is now "Hilary", because I am flighty and already have another character in another book named Hazel and forgot to change this one. I've edited past stories to reflect this as well. ;)
ReplyDeleteAww for a second I thought she was going to stay with him, but then all of the emotions and turmoil would have been for nothing, so I am glad she went. I do hope it makes them stronger, and doesn't tear them apart. Looking forward to seeing what adventures they get into this summer.
ReplyDeleteShe really wanted him to change her mind, but I think they both know better. They're smart kids. This summer is going to be very eventful! :)
DeleteAw. Sad and beautiful at the same time. I think Natty had to go though, after all of this. I'm happy that Charlie is being so...understanding. Or maybe he's not really understand but he's doing a good job at keeping up the appearance of it for Natty's sake.Sulking about it would have made it so much harder for both of them. If this is the end for them (and like Maisie, I hope it's not), I'm glad the last five days for them were as happy as they could be, given the circumstances.
ReplyDeleteOn a lighter note, I saw your tweet about planning Natty's PJ outfits, so I was looking out for them, lol! I think she has almost as many pairs of PJs as I do. Some people are addicted to caffeine or alcohol. I am addicted to pyjamas!
Oh, I had so many more pairs of pajamas planned for her, but this got SO long and I got SO sick of posing Sims, lol! I'll have to work some more of her pajamas into her next few stories too.
DeleteYeah, if this wasn't Natty and Charlie exactly, if it was some other couple who didn't get each other and feel each other like they do, then his reaction would probably be very different. So that counts for something. She's been desperate to explain to him why she's doing this and that she still loves him very much, and I think he believes that she's genuine. So that's where his head is at for now. I do think he'll feel differently once the reality of her being gone sets in though. :\
What a great update! Oh my gosh, it was too cute and bitter sweet!
ReplyDeleteThe 'different kind of pictures' scene totally made me laugh, and Charlie's face when Natty said 'okay your turn', lol! Classic!!
Love the reference at the end too, that's when they were on the swings right?
It's sad too see them part but in a way it's the beginning of new things and experiences for them. Those five days thought I sure neither of them will ever forget. :)
Ha, yes! Thank you for noticing the reference to the swings scene! It always makes me happy when you guys notice stuff like that!
DeleteThanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)
