I've showed her off on Twitter a little, but Vicky was born in TS3 a few days ago! Here's her CAS shot, if you haven't seen it already. (I have lowered her eyes just a bit since that CAS shot though - these pictures posted here are more accurate... and I swear I took another one of her on the beach, but I guess I didn't? lol!)

But anyway, it's this shot above that inspired the whole plot for our "spring break" update next season. Just look at April's face - doesn't she look like she's up to no good? Poor Vicky doesn't know what she's gotten herself into!

And *how* might one single sinister glance inspire a whole story? I don't know - it just did, lol!

These aren't "real" shots or anything though. I just felt like playing a little. After so much work making Sims and world-building, I've still hardly gotten a chance to play the game much at all. Or even just take random shots without the purpose of storytelling in mind.

*** On How to Modify Aging and Preggy Mods ***

First off:

This assumes a very basic knowledge of s3pe. Like, enough to open a file and commit your changes, lol! If you worked with SimPe at all in Sims 2, you'll be good to go. If not even, this shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

With modding the aging mod, I figure it's not the modding part that's difficult, so much as which numbers to use.

On Modifying an Aging Mod:

The first thing to do in modding your own aging mod is decide the how short/long your lifespans will be in relation to each other. In the big picture. These are calculated in Sim-days.

Now get yourself a notebook and a sturdy calculator. For real, you need the calculator. I was *awesome* at advanced math in high school, and I had to force my brain around this one.

(But then, you know, it's also been a little while since high school, lol!)

I've been doing a little bit of work with Bluewater Township lately. Many of you have probably already seen these on Twitter or Tumblr, but in case not...

This is a party we've already kind of begun here, with the TS2 to TS3 Sim conversions, and the CAW news on the LH world. Those will continue as we move along, and we'll also be having some other party games here too! :)

There are only two full updates left for TS2 (one of which is mostly shot already, and I have one more left to do), so it's almost time, people! I'm excited, lol! I'm not sure if I'm prepared for the switch-over, but I'm totally going to wing it! I have shot one future update in TS3 already, and while it was tricky, and I know I have a lot of things to learn and get used to, I had a lot of fun doing it!

I'm doing a couple of finishing fixes to my LH-test terrain, and then I'm going to start moving some real families in! It's not "finished", and likely won't be really finished for many more months, but I am ready to play it and build on it for real. I'm sure I won't really know what I want from it for sure until I've played on it anyway, which is sort of backwards, but I've always been a build-as-you-go kind of girl! ;)

So let's celebrate, shall we?!? :D

And also note, as soon as I get these last couple TS2 stories finished, the story itself should begin to move a bit faster again. Right now, even though I do have very little Simming time, I'm also having to split that time between getting story pics in TS2 and doing my conversion work in TS3. So once I'm done with TS2 story pics, it'll be a lot easier for me to get my TS3 story pics while I'm already in the game ;)

Oh, but wait, what I wanted to talk about was SKINS! Yes, that's what it was. Skins. I found a new set of skin-shade sliders for my lovely alien family! So I thought I'd use Dallas to test them out. Of course, for comparing them to a normal human skin, we'll need Lucy to demonstrate the difference. That's what this is really about. Yes, that's right!... ;)

life hack: how not to make your laptop spontaneously combust...

All of you playing games on your laptops - do you prop your laptop up off the desk?

I never thought about this before, because I'd also never used my laptop for anything but simple word processing and blog reading before. But now that I'm playing TS3 on it - a very demanding bitch, let me tell you - I noticed that as I was playing, as my game ran slower and slower, I could hear the fan just dying to cool the poor thing. I felt underneath and found that it was blazing hot - like, burn your hand hot!

Laptops are meant to be held on laps, I suppose, where they get much more space to ventilate on the bottom. But when you run a laptop on a desk, the bottom has no room to breathe.

So, simple problem, simple solution - I tucked a couple stacks of post-its under the corners of my laptop so it would have a half-inch of space to breathe better, and still get to use the laptop at a desk. The machine cooled down almost instantly, and my game ran much, much better!

(People will say it doesn't directly make the laptop perform better, but by freeing up resources that the cooling system was hogging, it kind of does.)

There are trays you can buy that serve this same purpose. Or, if you're lazy and/or cheap, you could just grab a couple stacks of post-its, lol!

Updates on my LH world progress. The main Lake City areas of the map are mostly all plotted out now. That's on the left side there, the city grid you see between the two bridges. That will represent Lake City, West Washington, Old West End, and LCU.

And having finished up the bulk of work on Lake City's streets, I've just now begun work on the Lakeside Heights/Bluewater half of the map. I'm still pretty unsure about what I'll do with Bluewater. I hadn't wanted to erase all those lovely farm fields, but I also don't want Bluewater there in that spot either. And I don't need the farm fields to take up quite so much space. I suppose I better practice my terrain painting then ;)

university in Sims 3

*warning: this is about to be the dorkiest thing you've ever seen, lol!*

I've been spending far, FAR too much time in CAW this week. I need to stop. Like, seriously - I even took the disk out of my drive as a deterrent, lol!

But the good news is, the first segment of my world is plotted and ready to build on! It still needs finishing touches like street lamps 'n such, but I'm going to do those all together at the end, I think. And the district you see here is the future site of LCU!

22 lots already here on campus (planned for: 7 campus buildings, 4 residence lots, 1 science facility, 6 small courtyards or parks, 2 parking lots, 1 campus shops, 1 subway station), and I've even forgot four more lots I need! :o By the time I'm finished with this, my world is going to be so HUGE I can't even play it!!!

Which has gotten me thinking a lot (and getting a million new ideas in my head) about University in Sims 3. (But we have no University for TS3, you say?) No matter though! I'm picking up some old tricks I used to use back in the early TS2 days, before we had TS2 Uni - I faked it! Back in the day, I would just make up lists of classes they had to complete to earn a degree. (This is all outside the game, by the way - it won't make any difference one way or another to actual gameplay.)

So for the first three weeks I've been back from vacation, my brain has been a cesspool of unholy mush. And now that my brain appears to be rising from the dead, I really need to take advantage of that and get some work done on the book... before my head start to fester in the blistering-hot sun again. (Sorry, hubby's had me watching too many rotten horror movies lately, lol!)

So this is clearly just mostly Riverview Lite at the moment, but I have begun making some edits to slowly transform this bad boy into Lakeside Heights. On the left side of the river will be Lake City, and on the right side will be a mish-mashed version of Lakeside Heights and Bluewater neighborhoods. The brown areas at the bottom shorelines are where I've extended the land so far. On the bottom left will be the Stoneview Court neighborhood, and the bottom right will be the Lakeside Heights Lakeshore area.

shenanigans in the valley

Just some initial thoughts and discussion, now that I've had the game about a week.

The first thing I've done with this game was to get all my default replacements in order and try to get some of my Sims recreated. I had an easier time with some of them than others.

You guys can guess who these Sims are, right!?! ;)

Summer in the Valley, v.2

I shortened her face a bit, and I think it made a big difference. I think I finally got her cheeks round enough, and her chin round enough while having a narrow jaw still. I might pull her chin up just a smidge more. I still want to do more to her nose - it should be more sloped, and pointier at the tip. I need to darken her freckles a bit too. But she's getting there!

valley girl for a day

Guess who showed up in Sunset Valley this afternoon!?!

No, really, guess! Because I don't think she looks much like her TS2 counterpart at all, lol! Or at least not as much as I'd like. I need to find some better hacked sliders or something. The only CC I've got so far is eyes and skins, and I'm sure some better makeup and clothing would make a world of difference as well.

So I did it, people! I finally bit the bullet and bought TS3!!! I have Ambitions installed so far, and have Late Night waiting to install next, but I'm worried it'll blow my laptop. I'm quite surprised my laptop is running this game at all, because I honestly didn't think it would. I was supposed to wait until I bought a new computer, but you know... I didn't, lol!

how to read the history of the entire universe...?

Topped off my story pics yesterday, and the first draft of the story. Should be able to start polishing it up tonight! :)

Also author's note and newbie's guide are updated! I also numbered up the seasons on the round pages. We're currently working through season 12! Lot of story here! :o

And on the topic of all that story... I've been doing a lot of thinking about the story archives lately. And when I have a little more free time this summer, I think I'd like to finally finish cleaning up the older posts, fixing the compressed pictures, maybe rewriting some of the very old stuff. And I was also considering maybe moving all of my gameplay stuff over to this blog.

The reason being, soon enough people aren't going to be playing TS2 anymore. (I know, I know, we all swear we're going to love it forever, lol!) But the point is that some day those gameplay notes aren't going to mean much to anyone anymore. And also, I think all the gameplay notes probably scare off some more mainstream readers (meaning people who don't play Sims) - when really, this story isn't even about the gameplay anymore anyway. So in short, I'd still like the story to stand on its own, and to be readable as a story for a long time to come! As long as I'm around to pay my hosting fees! ;)

So I have a few questions for you (mostly for people who *haven't* followed the story from the beginning):

- When you first started reading, how did you catch up on the story? Did you use the "newer post" links on the bottom? (Those are kind of hard to see, underneath the comments like they are.) Or did you use the story links on the round page? Did you just drop straight in and read backwards as necessary? Or some other means of catching up?

- As you were catching up, did you read the comments, or did you just skip straight to the next story?

- Are the round pages useful at all?

- Do you think a new reader would prefer a "next chapter" link in a more obvious place, like at the end of the post, before the comments? (OMG, that would be a lot of work, lol! But I would do it if I knew people would actually use them.)

- If you were just reading for story, did you find the gameplay notes, author's notes, or outtakes annoying or cluttery? And if so, how did you navigate around them?

And finally - do you think it's easy enough for a new reader to navigate through this story? And is there anything I can do to make it easier?

Lily with Grandma Cindy (Justin's mom). I don't get to show much of Justin's parents around here. And she's actually the grandmother that Lily sees most, since Lily stays with either her or Stephanie while Justin is working. (Oh, the ridiculously meticulous story details I must share, lol!)

I'm sorry I keep pushing this damn update back, again and again. I did actually start decorating for it a little today, which is what this spam is about. I think this was the only room I needed to do more with, so next time I get my game started up, I should be able to start taking pics. We'll see.

After the current season, there are 5 more! Oh my geeze, this is a long story, lol! :o

Three have titles so far, and a lot of these stories are drafted already, though I'm sure the actual filling out and polishing of them all will take me a LONG time.

I am committed to finishing the whole thing though. And for as long as I know this is going to take, it'll give me lots of time to practice my photo & 3D illustrating skills for the spin-off. You know, the spin-off that I clearly won't be starting for another 5 years, lol! Ah well, at least I'll have fun in the process.

(And you know, it used to be that I could finish a season in like 2 months - now it's more like 10 months, lol! Eeek!)

And I know you guys don't want it to end anyway, so take comfort in the fact that it'll be around for a long time still ;)

Though, if all goes according to plans, the last 5 seasons will be illustrated with TS3 rather than TS2. After I finish the current season, I'm going to take a stab at Sims 3 and see what I can get it to do. I'll post up the results, and we can all weigh in on whether it passes the test or not.

I want to babble about my story! I don't really have much outlet for just talking about it, complaining about it, being wondered by it, without having to clog up the notes at the end of my updates. Maybe this can be a place for that? Especially since you all know the joys and frustrations of Sim-storytelling so well.

Like last night, I was having such trouble with this huge-ass multi-Sim update I'm working on, that should have been so simple! The problem always seems to stem from me having an image in my head for a scene that I can't quite get the game to do.

First, it was too dark for pictures in the early morning light, so I made it daylight (I'm suddenly envying Sims 3 players for their beautiful and intricate lighting!)

Then it started to rain! Dammit, I didn't want it to rain! I swear, I know it's spring in my hood and all, but there hasn't been a rainless day the entire season! And I'm talking about across several different lots! I'm usually okay with it, you know, just write it into the story, but for this particular scene, I want NO rain.

Anyway, so I grab a Sim and send her to the weather machine (this is after the lot debugger's "less rain" was a huge FAIL!).

And dammit Keri, could you just manage to clear the fracking sky without causing fireballs? Now, of all times? So instead of shooting my update, now fireballs are coming down from the sky, and I'm busy putting out fires (but hey, look, I discovered you can move-objects and delete fires - that's handy!)

But what sucks the most is my HUGE-ASS CAST OF SIMS all start running to see the fire! My HUGE-ASS CAST OF VISITORS all run off the lot and into oblivion. So now I have to teleport them all back in.

Dammit, Keri, you see what you did??? Was it asking too much? You weren't even that low in the green! Sheesh!

And that is the story of how a should-have-been simple one-scene update took me THREE freaking hours to shoot!

(I still love Keri, btw, I'm just a little angry with her right now.)
